COMPARING
The music videos both represent girl power and they both have similar target audience of teenagers. Beyoncé music video 'Formation' shows the context of racial tension and the New Orleans flooding and the Hurricane Katrina within the video, which Beyoncé is inviting audiences to interpret historical circumstances.
Whereas, in Katy Perry's music video 'Roar'. It shows the context of women becoming strong and to be more tough but also still caring at the same time. She wants to show how women can still be caring about others but also independent and to not follow them.
Within Beyoncés music video the symbolic codes would be like the Antebellum to show how in specific black women used to be and what they did. The dresses symbolise the olden times. She also had a police car that she was on top during her talking about police and how they have no mercy on someone that could be innocent, and that she wants the shootings to stop. Within the video she also shows black women with Afros out during the whole video to show who they really are but also to make a direct address to the audience by gazing, standing strong and powerful in front of both men and women. However, in Katy Perry's she shows both feminine and seductive side of her. The whole thing is about women being independent and powerful.
