Riptide - (Vance Joy) Music Video

Riptide- Vance Joy

The music video of 'Riptide' by Vance Joy shows relations to the way mainly women are being represented. Within the music video it shows a range of representations of women, which can make people think whether the video is, reinforced a patriarchal view or subverting women in the media. The video also repeatedly show the same women as if they were a type of object that you meant to watch within the music video to get an understanding of what the theme of this music actual is about. For example, in one part of the video it showed a woman facing away from the camera showing her back towards the camera undressing herself by the water out of her own swimsuit. It creates a confined area of women bodies like showing their legs or feminine hands being dragged to a shadowed corner and also the bare feet that was on the beach running through the sand, it can present a challenge of making women an object of women in a variety of music videos.
Another, would also be the girl that was tied to a tree shows that the woman wanted to escape as if she was trapped or under a spell. But, within the scene it also shows her running away as well to tell people that she was trying to run away from the drama and the chaos that she was in and that it would be a safer option for her.

There is also a lot of lip-sync sections within the music video where a woman sings the lyrics of the song in a dark room with a light shining at her, holding a microphone. This shows at first she has clear well put on make-up showing conforming to social norm of beauty and appearance by the media. As the music video returns back to the character repeatedly she becomes more disarrange, the make-up that was glamorous become smudged and spreaded all over her face. Her expressions that she shows becomes more bare as she starts saying the words wrong as if she was hiding what is really happening in her life behind closed curtains.

However, within the music video it shows a variety of scenes that show an imagery of violence and how it shows her being hurt and bleeding. An example, would be when the hand in the video was being stabbed by a knife and also the gun that was being pointed to someone of-screen with just a dark background. The lip-syncing lady was at the end holding on to her neck while blood was spilling out of her neck which you could see on her hands in the music video clearly showed that the woman was being assaulted. The audience may think that the images use in the music video id disturbing and why they did it like this, and that it may make the audience think  whether the concept is normalising or trivialising violence. But, it is shown to the whole public which then could make certain audiences of a younger age think that it is a normal thing b, but. But, then it also shows that it is disturbing and that make the audience think that violence is a horrible thing and can change people on the way they act in front of others by putting on a fake expression to hide it.

The fact that they show violence in the video can also show a stereotype that men are a more dominant and stronger gender. Whereas, women are more weaker and inferior and that they cant do anything without a man with them or by their side. With what the music video presents over 6 years it has changed, from 2013 violence was more of a frequent thing and people knew it was a problem because of how often you would hear about it. But, now it has changed in authority and that it is not as frequent but still happening and that it has not really been mentioned a lot than in 2013. It also shows that women are not not represented as inferior anymore and that they can equally do as much as men and that gender shouldn't really show a stereotype because of the way people act out to others. People shouldn't follow what society thinks but what they think of themselves. But, this also shows how society portrays gender and how it is not equal and that one gender is more superior than the other. And that media makes people believe things that they shouldn't believe in because it is not true or reliable to anybody. The use of Joys literacy devices are what help people to understand the music video better because he helps the narrative unfold itself in a rather perplexing manner.

The melody of the music is very uptempo and simple. The melody moves in a clear and smooth direction with the only meal change occurring in the chorus. Although, the music sounds like a happy song he was trying to let people know that he was also trying to overcome his fear, which explains why the musics volume increases to show there was a narrative behind it as well as, him repeating lyrics to the audience.
